The Pitch
The Meisha Carbon-Neutral Community of Healthy Future initiative reimagined Shenzhen as a living model for low-carbon urban living. By combining circular economy approaches, community-led action and nature-based solutions, the initiative reduced emissions while creating healthier, more resilient neighborhoods for people and nature.
The Problem
Shenzhen lacked a comprehensive, community-scale model that addressed carbon emissions, organic waste, biodiversity loss and resident behavior change simultaneously, leaving neighborhoods without a clear, replicable pathway toward carbon neutrality that also prioritized resident health and ecological resilience.
The Process
- Conducted a comprehensive baseline survey across the Meisha neighborhood, assessing natural resources, cultural heritage, waste management systems and carbon emissions
- Established Meisha as one of Shenzhen’s first near-zero carbon emission pilot communities, bringing together government agencies, businesses, researchers and residents to test new approaches to low-carbon urban living
- Upgraded community infrastructure with rooftop solar, energy storage systems and smart energy management technologies to reduce emissions and increase reliance on renewable energy
- Introduced innovative circular economy solutions for food waste treatment, including black soldier fly technology to help divert organic waste from disposal
- Empowered residents through the Community Changemaker Program, shared garden co-creation activities, zero-waste neighborhood trials and points-based rewards systems, building a stronger culture of participation around infrastructure upgrades
- Established data indicators for near-zero carbon community construction as a reference for other communities
- Developed the Near-Zero Carbon Community Construction Guidelines based on lessons from the Meisha pilot, incorporating expert feedback to establish a replicable standard for sustainable urban transformation across Shenzhen and nationally
The Impact
- Reached more than 20,000 residents through the creation of a low-carbon, eco-friendly and healthy community environment, with 10,000 residents participating in more than 200 activities since 2021
- Decreased net carbon emissions by approximately 40% between 2020 to 2025, reducing total carbon emissions by more than 1,000 tons
- Used black soldier fly farming techniques to achieve greater greenhouse gas mitigation
- Installed 1.2 MW of rooftop solar PV, meeting 45% of energy demand from renewable energy
- Transformed the LEED Platinum-certified Vanke Center into a carbon-neutral showcase and public education base, attracting more than 1,000 students daily and hosting more than 50,000 visitors annually for hands-on engagement with low-carbon technologies and sustainable art
- Added five communal gardens and one communal vegetable garden, creating shared spaces for residents while supporting habitat for pollinators and birds
- Sparked 15 resident-led initiatives through the Community Changemaker Program, addressing overlooked issues such as second-hand book exchange, stray animal rescue and children’s mental health
