The Pitch
Coimbra Regional Intermunicipal Community developed an on-demand, accessible and efficient taxi system to improve the region’s interconnectedness and reduce rural depopulation.
The Problem
The Coimbra Region lost 6% of its residents over 10 years because of rural depopulation.
The Process
- Piloted the SIT FLEXI taxi system that offers rides to residents when requested, but also has predefined schedules, stops and routes
The Impact
- Influenced people to move back to the Coimbra Region by improving and increasing access to public transit
- Reduced fares to match the cost of a bus ticket, improving access to essential services for all residents
- Improved social cohesion
- Increased the region’s transport network coverage to 100%, enabling further regional development projects
