Socioeconomic Reactivation Strategy

Agencia para las Alianzas Público Privadas –APP of Medellín (Agency for Public-Private Partnerships of Medellín)
The Pitch

The Agency for Public-Private Partnerships of Medellín reinvested in Medellín’s public spaces by enhancing them with urban art and mobility infrastructure, revitalizing the community’s economic opportunities and improving social cohesion.

The Problem

Public spaces in Medellín’s Provenza neighborhood and surrounding areas were poorly maintained and underused, leaving residents without outdoor space to gather and reinforcing car-centric roads that limit active mobility.

The Process
  • Created a plan for socioeconomic reactivation that turns public spaces into thriving business zones
  • Instituted a fee for anyone using public space and receiving commercial benefits to fund the maintenance of public spaces
  • Developed a scheme that directs economic returns back into improving public space in the Provenza neighborhood
  • Used urban art to add vibrancy to public places
  • Participated in inter-administrative governmental roundtables to execute the project
The Impact
  • Created expansive new public areas and pathways for pedestrians and businesses
  • Added new job opportunities
  • Encouraged community interaction and circulation through public spaces
  • Added 5,200+ square meters of public space to the Provenza neighborhood
  • Redesigned roads to be mixed-use, accommodating pedestrians and cyclists in addition to motorized vehicles
  • Turned Provenza into a major tourist attraction for the city, bringing patrons to local businesses
  • Added an additional 3,053 square meters of public space to the Astorga, Manila and Lleras neighborhoods, supporting their tourism, leisure and commercial industries
  • Encouraged the Mayor’s Office of Medellín to integrate urban art into their PINTURA MED project
