The Pitch
Temple Town Renewal transformed Guruvayur into a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable city by replacing unsanitary waste disposal with a community-driven circular waste management system that creates green public spaces, empowers women and improves public health.
The Problem
As one of India's busiest pilgrimage destinations, Guruvayur welcomes millions of visitors annually, and generates significant amounts of organic and inorganic waste. For decades, waste was dumped into an open landfill that grew into a mountain of garbage, creating severe pollution, public health risks and environmental degradation while limiting access to safe public spaces.
The Process
- Replaced an open dumping site with a citywide waste management system centered on windrow composting that converts organic waste into compost while recovering recyclable materials
- Converted former dumping grounds into parks, playgrounds and green public spaces, returning neglected land to residents
- Established the women-led Haritha Karma Sena to lead door-to-door waste collection, sorting, compost production, recycling and community awareness, creating stable livelihoods while building public ownership of the city’s waste system
- Expanded the initiative beyond waste management by investing in improved drainage, canal restoration, water quality monitoring and urban greening to strengthen environmental resilience
- Promoted community participation through household composting, public education campaigns, affordable waste collection services and the "My Waste, My Responsibility" initiative to encourage waste segregation and reduce waste sent for disposal
- Reinvested revenue from user fees, compost sales and recycling into expanding waste management services, combining it with municipal investments to support a financially sustainable system
- Introduced robotic sewer-cleaning technology (Bandicoot scavengers), ending manual scavenging in the city and removing a major occupational health hazard for sanitation workers
The Impact
- Directly benefited more than 70,000 residents while improving the experience of nearly 30 million annual pilgrims visiting Guruvayur
- Expanded door-to-door waste collection from 400 households to more than 18,000 households across the municipality
- Processed five to seven tons of organic waste each day through scientific composting, replacing unsanitary dumping practices
- Cleared an 88-foot mountain of waste and transformed former dumping sites into parks, playgrounds and green public spaces
- Created stable employment for 108 families through the women-led Haritha Karma Sena, advancing women's economic empowerment and financial security
