Beyond Expectation Environmental Project
The Pitch
Beyond Expectation Environmental Project (BEEP) trained youth from informal settlements in climate awareness and adaptation, enabling them to organize resilience projects in their own neighborhoods.
The Problem
Numerous informal settlements in and around Cape Town face harsh climate impacts. These communities often struggle with major impacts of climate change but have no say in the decisions made to address them.
The Process
- Recruited youth from informal settlements to be part of a climate-awareness program
- Mentored youth and educated them on the impacts of climate change
- Developed safety manuals and protocols to protect youth participating in the program
The Impact
- Increased capacity of youth to lead local climate adaptation programs and make informal settlements climate resilient
- Helped youth find jobs through training and a community support organization network: 66 program graduates were placed in green jobs (waste management, recycling, greening, infrastructure maintenance and more) in their settlements
