Changing Faces Competition (CFC): Engaging Citizens in Public Space Management

Public Space Network
The Pitch

Public Space Network created a competition that mobilized community groups to revitalize and steward abandoned urban spaces.

The Problem

Nairobi faced a myriad of interconnected challenges, including widespread garbage dumps, mounting pollution, deteriorating infrastructure and rising crime rates.

The Process
  • Developed and scaled the Changing Faces Competition after it was piloted by the Dandora Transformation League
  • Challenged resident groups to turn public spaces into clean, green, safe, inclusive and vibrant spaces
  • Using Public Space Network’s “4P” approach (public, private, people, partnership), recruited urban experts to mentor resident groups, partnered with authorities to ensure legal compliance and found sponsorships from the private sector
  • Trained “Community Champions,” to liaise between teams and stakeholders and expand engagement
The Impact
  • Increased the number of participating resident groups from only five in year one to 125 in year two
  • Transformed 120+ neglected spaces into revenue generating spaces like playgrounds, gardens, parks or parking lots
  • Engaged 3,000+ youth
  • Created employment opportunities for youth that helped to reduce crime In Dandora by as much as 70%
  • Enhanced public health, safety and quality of life through improvement of public areas and creation of new green spaces
