Fideicomiso Pro Bosque de Chapultepec
The Pitch
The Chapultepec Pro Bosque Trust (Fideicomiso Pro Bosque de Chapultepec) amended decades of forest degradation and disinvestment in the surrounding areas by improving the Chapultepec Forest and Park’s ecological integrity and restoring monuments. This created recreation opportunities, attracted new businesses and added jobs.
The Problem
Mexico City’s Chapultepec Forest and Park had been in decline since the 1980s due to unregulated urban growth, water pollution and the introduction of harmful invasive species. The forest was neglected and did not have a maintenance plan.
The Process
- Fundraised 580 million pesos over 18 years and invested these resources in three master plans for the park
- Collaborated with state officials, academics, artists, businesses and civil society to form partnerships, incorporate diverse views into restoration plans and fundraise
- Conducted ecological studies to identify problems and used findings to develop design plans
- Restored the ecological integrity of the forest through reforestation
- Improved irrigation system management and reduced water pollution
- Rehabilitated and restored the park’s historical monuments, sculptures and fountains
- Incorporated merchants and vendors into plans, making the space family-friendly
The Impact
- Increased the amount of job opportunities within 500 meters of the park to 303,000 and the number of inhabitants to 157,000 by making the area more attractive and bringing in restaurants, businesses and boat and bike rental services
- Revitalized the area via restoration, attracting new investments in development and increasing tourism and pedestrian traffic
- Made well-managed green space accessible to Mexico City’s residents
- Provides a multitude of ecosystem services
- Created safe opportunities for exercise, recreation and active mobility by adding new walking paths equipped with lights, public squares and boat and bike rental services
- Inspired other park restoration projects in Mexico City: San Juan de Aragón Forest is following the same guidelines and standards used to restore and revitalize Chapultepec Forest and Park
