Child-Friendly Street for Renca Metropolitan Park

La Fabrica
The Pitch

La Fabrica improved the connectivity of Renca’s urban center to Renca Metropolitan Park by creating a pedestrian-safe zone and building new public amenities.

The Problem

The hills near Renca Metropolitan Park and the city’s urban center were unmaintained and covered with informal garbage dumps.

The Process
  • Designed and established a pedestrian zone in place of the street connecting Renca Metropolitan Park and the wider urban area
  • Added public toilets, a public theater, a viewpoint, security features, a picnic area and a sports field around and inside the new pedestrian zone
  • Reforested areas around and in the park
  • Created a new waste management protocol for the park and pedestrian zones
The Impact
  • Improved pedestrian access to the park from the city: Children can walk to the park safely and all residents can use the new public amenities provided
  • Increased the number of annual visitors to the park from 13,673 in 2017 to 547,300 in 2022
  • Increased patronage of local businesses, helping to grow the local economy
  • Drastically reduced the solid waste dumped in the area by developing the pedestrian zone and adding a new waste system
  • Breathed life back into the park and provided spaces for residents to interact and enjoy the outdoors by creating new public spaces and adding greenery
