K100 Citizens' Waterway Project

MOD Foundation
The Pitch

Mod Foundation installed a new urban drainage system and upgraded infrastructure in Bengaluru through a data-informed and collaborative process to reduce flooding and improve public health.

The Problem

Bengaluru’s stormwater drainage network was mismanaged and degraded, causing flooding after rain events and generating public health hazards.

The Process
  • Conducted house surveys in catchment zones and used them to segregate stormwater and wastewater systems
  • Collected data in the city’s four valleys to inform management practices
  • Restored and improved the city’s drainage network through a series of interventions: trunk sewer line rectification, installation of new sewer lines, improved bridges, solid waste management reforms and new public spaces
  • Upgraded overhead power lines and transformers into sub-stations for safety and efficiency
  • Established a sewage treatment plant that treats 5 million liters per day
  • Implemented a decentralized wastewater treatment system in the D’Souza Garden informal settlement
  • Prioritized infrastructure maintenance and accessibility for efficacy and easy fixes
  • Generated civic participation throughout the project by working with local organizations
  • Kept residents informed and engaged via media coverage
The Impact
  • Reduced urban flooding and improved water quality by separating stormwater and wastewater systems
  • Increased property and rental values near the drainage network by 300-400% and increased patronage of local businesses
  • Gained public support by consistently monitoring project progress and collaborating with NGOs, residents and volunteers
  • Increased civic responsibility: residents have reduced solid waste dumping and adopted new planters
  • Created a sense of safety and cleanliness in public spaces
  • Added new infrastructure like lighting and public park, providing space for neighbors to interact
  • Oriented the municipal government’s approach towards cross-departmental collaboration
  • Created partnerships between Bengaluru and other cities who want to replicate K100
