Metrobús: The BRT that Changed Mobility in Mexico City

El Organismo Público Descentralizado Metrobús
The Pitch

The Decentralized Public Agency Metrobús (El Organismo Público Descentralizado Metrobús) established an integrated bus rapid transit (BRT) system that connects to other transportation systems, expanding access to public transit and reducing air pollution.

The Problem

Mexico City had pervasive air pollution problems fueled by the use of cars instead of public transportation.

The Process
  • Created Metrobús, an efficient BRT system similar to an underground metro but with lower costs
  • Designated exclusive lanes for buses, allowing them to make frequent stops
  • Utilized contactless pay
  • Established a control and operations center to manage the service and store buses
The Impact
  • Created a citywide network that now has 140 kilometers of bus lanes, 218 stations, 695 buses and serves 1.5 million passengers per day
  • Made public transportation available to people of all ages and abilities
  • Minimizes emissions and meets global environmental standards
  • Encouraged public transportation use, reducing air pollution
  • Enabled the city to ensure passenger safety and address issues through creation of the monitoring center
  • Created a comprehensive network of public transport in Mexico City that lets users switch between modes of mobility: Metrobús is integrated into other public transit, such as Ecobici and the Metro, because it uses the same contactless payment card
