ME SOLshare Ltd.
The Pitch
ME SOLshare Ltd. introduced new smart batteries to Dhaka drivers (that rely on lithium ions rather than harmful lead acid), instituted charging stations and an affordable financing program to make the new, safer batteries accessible.
The Problem
Motorized vehicles in Dhaka widely used lead-acid batteries. However, these batteries were inefficient, required frequent replacement, were costly for drivers and exposed residents to health hazards. In addition, disposal of lead-acid batteries in water bodies creates high rates of lead poisoning
The Process
- Leased smart tech integrated batteries to drivers through a daily fee system, enabling drivers to replace harmful lead-acid batteries with lithium-ion batteries
- Provided charging garages with improved charging infrastructure and rooftop solar panels
- Trained personnel on how to use the new chargers and provided them with safety equipment
The Impact
- Improved energy efficiency and enhanced the electric grid’s climate resiliency by utilizing emissions-free technology
- Reduced human contact with lead
- Made new batteries more cost-effective than lead-acid batteries and gasoline vehicles: Drivers using smart batteries reported saving 25% of what they had been spending on lead-acid batteries
- Enabled drivers to save money by increasing battery lifetimes (to 7 years) and offering financing options
- Reduced the amount of pollution generated from battery disposal by lowering the use of lead-acid batteries
- Inspired the government to enact new policies that reform charging infrastructure and approve registration for micro-mobility options like battery-operated vehicles
- Worked with the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority to create the Electric Vehicle Charging Guidelines of 2022
