The Pitch
The Urban Intelligence Center of Porto Alegre (Centro de Inteligência Urbana de Porto Alegre – CIUPOA) helped prepare the city for the increasing impacts of climate change by collaborating with diverse stakeholders to develop the city’s (and Latin America’s) first resilience strategy.
The Problem
Climate resilience within cities is becoming a necessity as the climate warms and storms increase in intensity.
The Process
- Brought together stakeholders—including government officials, NGOs, business owners, researchers and more—to create the first Porto Alegre Resilience Strategy
- Integrated academic, technical and community knowledge
- Created a framework to measure the increase in resilience based on analysis of municipal management programs
The Impact
- Laid a solid framework of clear goals and actions steps to improve the city’s resilience, making institutional implementation smooth
- Served as a model for other cities to develop their own resilience programs
